Last Meting

On Monday, Roy gave a very informative talk about subjects such as 'RAW' versus 'JPEG', two formats used by modern digital cameras. He also mentioned other subjects such as colour selection and enhancing in our pictures.

Alan showed us a slideshow of his Berinbah Wetland trip and of another trip to seaworld.

Then Bill showed us his new movie of his trip to South Australia for which he used very dramatic music.

Roy is talking about 'RAW' versus 'JPEG'

We are currently preparing our plan for next year's meetings. If you have any suggestions of names of possible speakers for these meetings or field-trip suggestions, please let us know, we would appreciate your input.

We're Back!

Hi Members,

We're back again and this time for quite a long time. So let's look at what's happening at our next meeting on Monday 24th of October:

Roy was away with the flu last meeting, so his 'RAW' versus 'JPEG' segment was postponed and will be discussed this meeting.

This segment promises to be very interesting.

Also, we look at incorporating dramatic music to videos and show how important the soundtrack of a movie is.

And if you took some interseting pictures during our absence, bring them along to show us.

See you there

Meeting Updates

From all accounts, Jason from Photo Continental was a great speaker at the last meeting, just a shame Diane and I missed that, we might get him back next semester.

Roy was there and here's his report:

I think we all had a good morning listening to Jason – it’s good to get the experts view every now and then.

He addressed just about every feature of photography so we have no more excuses for poor shots. These were some of his topics:

  • Think before you start – do you have the right equipment, have you set it up for easy use and do you know what to expect from your subject.

  • If you are just taking pictures with little adjustment afterwards and don’t want to enlarge beyond 8X10 then JPEG images are fine otherwise consider using RAW

  • Practice aperture adjustments to get the depth of field you’re after.
  • SD cards range from slow C2 to fast C10, slow cards are OK for still photography but you should consider faster cards for movies and do not use bargain cards.
  • SD cards, hard drives, backup drives, memory sticks and CDs all fail eventually so keep your data in more than one place.

  • Carry a compact camera and don’t be afraid to use it even if you have a top-of-the-line DSLR – once the moment is gone it’s gone.
  • ND (neutral density) and Polarizing filters enable you to cut down on over-exposed shots but are expensive.
  • Using autofocus with telephoto lenses is difficult so practice beforehand.

The next meeting will be on Monday the 12th September at 11.00Am at the Logan North Library, where the main subject will be "Moving Water Photography." See you there.

THEN

We got stuck into food in more ways then one.

Hilda brought in one of her cakes for us to let loose with our cameras.

And she also brought some cup cakes for photographs AND to enjoy them with a cup of tea. Thank you very much Hilda.

Photoshop Magic

Last meeting, Jean gave us an introduction to Photoshop magic. Jean showed us as an introduction what can be done with images using Photoshop or Elements (the smaller and cheaper version) both available for PC or Apple computers.
Amazing what you find in a hollow log
You can take a section of one of your photos and paste it into another photo as Jean has done here. She inserted a group of people (copy) and placed them into a hollow log (paste)
Transport part of an image into another image

She did the same here with this horse and rider
Sorento - A Painting
In the above, Jean turned one of her photographs of Sorento into a piece of art.

If you're interested in learning more about these techniques, you have a chance next semester when Jean will run a Photoshop or Elements class at Logan U3A. For further information contact Jean at the next meeting.

Have a great weekend.

A Pleasant Field Trip

Our first field trip for 2011 went well yesterday morning at the Daisy Hill State Forest. The theme was 'close-up' photography with many opportunities on offer on the board walk.

Our First Outing

Hi Everyone,

It's time for our first Field Trip in 2011 and what better place to visit than the Daisy Hill State Forest where there are lots of opportunities to capture great pictures. Who knows, you might even be lucky to capture a Wallaby or a Koala.

MONDAY 17th FEBRUARY 2011 AT 11.00 AM

We'll meet at Car Park P3 as shown on the map below

Just follow the Ring Road (it's one way) and slip into the 3rd car park. If by any chance it should be full, (probably unlikely on a Monday) just drive to P4 or P5 and walk across the park, it's not far.

We hope to see you all on Monday Morning at 11.00 AM at the
Logan North Library - Springwood

We're back into the Swing

We had quite a few new members at our first meeting on the 17th which was very good to see. However disappointing was the absence of a lot of last year's members. Maybe that was because we had to change from Thursdays to Mondays this year.

Just in case, here is the program until the end of February...

We hope to see you all again on the 31st of January

Saturday, January 15, 2011
