The Last Meeting Today

Another year bites the dust. We had our last meeting for the year this morning. A big thank you to Sheila and Wendy for looking after the club in our absence over the last four weeks. Although, Diane, Kathy and I were physically present today, mentally it was a big effort for us. We are still suffering from jet lag as we have never suffered before on our numerous overseas trips. No one can explain why this time would be different.

However, we started off looking at the pictures members submitted on the subject of sharp images.

Diane is trying hard to concentrate on the members submissions
The main topic of Family Photography was excellently researched by Yvonne who provided not only the text but also the Powerpoint Presentation to go with the text. Thank you Yvonne.

Then we discussed next year's time table and volunteers to research some of the topics. We also looked at possible guest speakers and club outings. We will now complete the program for 2015 and present it to the club before we'll meet again in the new year.

After the meeting, the club gathered at our house in Daisy Hill, for a bit of fellowship and a few bites to eat and a few drinks.

All that is left for us is to wish you all a happy Festive Season
and all the best wishes for the New Year

Bill and Diane

Next Meeting Monday 8 November 2014 - 11.00 AM

Hi Members,

If you haven't already done so, please send Sheila your three sharpest photos following our last meeting's topic.

We're in Nuorlans (New Orleans to outsiders), but we'll be back for the meeting on the 8th. Whether we'll be awake is another matter.

Diane will present the topic, researched by Yvonne, namely Family Photos.

We'll also be discussing topics for next year, so think about it, so that we can compile a club program for 2015.

After the meeting, we'll have a get together at our place at 45 Highview Terrace, Daisy Hill to celebrate our year's achievements this year. Please bring a plate as we won't have time to prepare anything.

SEE YOU MONDAY

Last Meeting

Hi Members,

Glad to see the club runs perfectly well without us. While we were gallavanting around Hollywood, the club held its meeting in our absence.

Thank you very much to Sheila who organised and ran the slideshow of members and to Merv Amos who presented the main topic, Organisation with Lightroom.

Thanks also to Sheila for organising the pictures of the meeting.

We're still away next meeting but I understand that Sheila has set a challenge for the slideshow and Wendy has organised a guest speaker who is going to talk about Depth of Field and keeping photographs sharp.

Bernie is working on his movie tomorrow and has invited me onto the set to watch them work while Diane baby-sits the boys.

Greetings to all of you.

Cheers,

Bill

Next Meeting - Monday 10 November - 11.00 AM Logan North Library

Hi members,

If you're going on the night shoot of  the Colour Me Brisbane event tonight, remember, the club meets at 6 PM on the forecourt of the Cultural Centre at South Bank, from where Sheila and Chris will take you on a walking tour to get the best shots available.

Bus 555 picks up at Logan Hyperdome, Springwood and Eight Mile Plains and stops right at the Cultural Centre where the club meets. Or the Beenleigh train stops at South Brisbane, just across from the Cultural Centre.

Then send your best three shots to Sheila, who will show them on Monday at the meeting. Sheila's email is sheelz@live.com.au. Don't send them to me, we'll be on a plane to the USA.

This is what you'll see tonight:

The main topic on Monday will be presented by member Merv Amos who will talk about organising pictures, using Adobe Lightroom. I am very disappointed that I'll miss that.

Have fun tonight and on Monday.

Cheers,

Bill

Finding Vivian Maier

Next week a movie about an incredible amateur photographer comes to theatres in Australia. Vivian Maier was a nanny who took thousands of shots in her free time, without ever showing any of them to anyone. She was an extremely private person who used to lock herself in her room where she developed some of her films unbeknownst to her charges or employers.

After she died, boxes and boxes of negatives and undeveloped roles of films were discovered in a storage place.

This led to the movie "Finding Vivian Maier".

Here is the movie Trailer:

Today's Meeting

Hi Members,

Today's meeting took a different format from our usual sequence, there was a reason.

Diane and I are away for the next three meetings and we had to sort out what's happening during these meetings. So here's what has been decided:

WEDNESDAY 5 NOV 6 PM
To make use of the Brisbane Light Show, Chris and Sheila will guide the club to the best spots to see the light show. So, members are asked to meet at 6.00 PM on the forecourt of the Cultural Centre at South Bank near the large BRISBANE sign. Chris suggests to meet by the letter 'E", apparently you can't miss it. The group will then walk across the Victoria Bridge to have a look at the buildings which are lit up.

It is quite spectacular. For further information, please phone Chris on 0407 646 286

More details will be posted on this blog a few days before the event so please keep checking the blog.

MONDAY 10 NOV 11.00 AM AT THE LIBRARY
Sheila will present your photos of the Light Show, so please send her your best three shots
sheelz@live.com.au

Merv Amos will present the main topic entitled ORGANISE PHOTOS WITH LIGHTROOM.

MONDAY 24 NOV 11.00 AM AT THE LIBRARY
Wendy has organised us a guest speaker. Photographer Peter Hardy will present his topic entitled Depth Of Field D.O.F and Sharpness. He will enlighten everyone with hints of how to keep your images sharp.

So to today's meeting:
Diane talked about a popular subject, Travel Photography and how to achieve stunning pictures.

Finally, we looked at the travel pictures supplied by members and there were some great images on display, here are some of them:

Next Meeting - Monday 27 October 2014 - 11.00 AM

The Club Program says Creating a Video. However as we'll have a Video Production class in Term 1 next year and quite a number of members have indicated that they want to join that class, we have decided to talk about Travel Photography instead. Check the 'NEWS' button on the right to find out more about the Video Production course next year.

As a traveller with a camera, capturing great images that represent the spirit of the place and its people is the key to successful results. Diane will outline the do's and don't's of Travel Photography.

Homeless in Hollywood

War of the Worlds Set - Universal Studios Hollywood

Just for something different, we have asked you to send us your three shots from your travels, before we discuss the topic at the meeting.

So if you haven't already done so, please send us three pics to u3acameraclub@gmail.com

On our club program, on the 24th November, we have Chris Simpson organising a Industrial Excursion. Chris was not able to find a suitable location.  Diane and I will be overseas so we are looking for a volunteer to come up with a topic or organise a guest speaker. Can you please give it a thought so we can talk about it at the next meeting.

Today's Meeting

Hi Members,

Thirty five members came along this morning, for the first meeting of this final term. Great to see.

Also great to see were the fabulous shots members took over the break of our challenge topic, BIRDS. Apologies to Sheila whose shots were left out of the slide show, here they are:

The guest speaker this morning was Trish Jackson, a friend of Rosalind's. Trish, is a thalidomide surviver, born with no arms, after her mother's doctor prescribed the now banned drug Thalidomide for her morning sickness, a fact he then denied after Trish was born without arms.

Trish recounted her memories, growing up with this disability and not letting it defeat her. She is an amazing woman going through life as if nothing could prevent her from a normal life.

She is an accomplished photographer, taking her pictures with her feet.

The next meeting is on Monday 27th October at the library. The challenge for that meeting is Travel Photography, so send us your three best shots, you took in Paris, London, Noosa, Ipswich or wherever.

This will be Diane and my last meeting for the year, as we're heading to the United States after that. But we'll be back again by the U3A Christmas Party.

Next Meeting - Monday 13 October 2014 - 11.00 AM

Hi Members,

Welcome to the last term of 2014.

We begin the meeting looking at our bird photographs taken either at Currumbin or whereever. So please send us your three best shots for us to see.

Bird Love - 1/500, f:6.4. ISO 100
Waterbird - 1/400, f:6 - ISO 200
Cormorant - 1/320, f:5.6. ISO 100
Send them as attachments to u3acameraclub@gmail.com as usual.

Main Topic:
We have a very interesting guest speaker on Monday. Trish Jackson, a friend of Rosalind is coming to talk to us. She is an award-winning photographer and  artist and had her work published in magazines newspapers and displayed in the Australian Parliament Building.

But the amazing part is that Trish is a thalidomide survivor. She was born with no arms and takes her photos with her feet. She is an amazing woman. I'm sure she'll be a fascinating guest speaker.

Let's make Trish very welcome on Monday.

SEE YOU THERE

Today's Meeting

Hi Members,

It was raining when we got up early this morning to go down the coast to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary at 8 o'clock for our photo shoot. By the time we got to the Sanctuary and everyone had arrived, the rain had stopped and the sun peeked out of the clouds from time to time.

First up was the feeding of the Lorikeets, an activity, very popular with the younger generations.

Then we strolled through the park past the wallabies, various birds, including bowerbirds, ducks and cormorants, we arrived at the waterbird feeding station.

The pelicans came from everywhere for a free feed.

A nice bunch of rather large eels came begging for a feed as well.

Then it was time for morning tea on the way to the Bird of Prey Show.

That's when the heavens opened up and those without umbrellas got a bit of a soaking.

We must thank Elaine for organising us half price entry tickets, that was great!

CHALLENGE FOR NEXT MEETING

Send three shots of your photos from today. If you couldn't make it, send us three shots of birds you've taken recently. If you can, please include the metadata, (speed, apperture and ISO)

Today's Meeting

Hi Members,

We had a full house today with another two new members joining us. So, now we have reached 49 members (and me makes 50). We can't accept any more members as the room at the library only holds 50 people. So any future enquiries will go on a waiting list.

We started off with the background photos submitted by members following Trevor's talk at the last meeting.

The main topic this morning was presented by member Elaine Wells on Backyard Bird Photography.

Member Elaine Wells presented the main topic this morning

The lesson notes on the subject are now on this blog

Magpie in flight by Elaine

Sea Gull in flight by Elaine
After Elaine's excellent presentation, members got together in groups where Elaine explained the best settings used for bird photography.

The meeting was unfortunately running right up to our allotted time of 12.45. We apologise to the tutor following the camera club.

Get ready! Next meeting, on the 22nd September, we'll go and practice what we've learnt today at the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary where we'll meet at 8.00AM. Details will be on this blog a week prior, including how to order entry tickets on line for half price.
